Hi Sam,
This is a very interesting project. Which DRT facility? How are you searching for additonal sites, and how nimble is the network switch architecture for advances expected from brocade, juniper, and cisco?

Thanks for sharing, the blog shows the planning and effort needed to get to the "data" in data centers.

Cheers,

I always wanted to see what goes into setting up a data center from the ground up and these images along with your description was a treat! With so much complexity involved, it sure has put paid on my plans of setting up my own datacenter anytime soon :).

Please post some pics in a future post of a filled up SL datacenter as well.

I'm curious, How many servers fit in each rack? How come you install 2 of each public and private switches (Wouldn't 1 be enough or is it a "spare"?)

Thanks for the great post.

Great question, BillC. There are pros and cons for every market, and those factors were definitely taken into consideration. We haven't come up with any ways to prevent earthquakes or lessen the power density in the South Bay Area, but our facility is in a new building, built to withstand significant seismic activity, and we have redundant power sources to ensure continuous power in the midst of possible brown-outs or black-outs.

One of the biggest factors that brought us to San Jose was customer demand. The Silicon Valley area is still considered the global capital of technology business, and adding a more significant presence there provides an accessible avenue for potential customers who want their infrastructure homed locally (for whatever reason).

Curious why you chose SJ for a new facility. There are 2 known problems with building in NorCal: the power grid is overtaxed and we have the occasional earthquake. Are those not issues here?
