Bringing Servers (and Koozies) to Europe!

A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to get to travel to Internet World in London for SoftLayer's first exposition at a tradeshow in the UK. With a new data center opening soon in Amsterdam, I was really excited to get to share our story and our vision for the future with a new audience.

I expected a few differences as I approached conversations at the show - accents, verbiage, thoughts on what this cloud stuff actually means, etc. - but as long as I could speak my Texan version of the language, I'd be able to explain who SoftLayer is and what we do ... With a few questions about what in the world a "switch ball" is and how it works. Here's a quick demonstration from GDC in San Francisco this year:

It's pretty funny to see the inventive ways conference attendees approach our giveaways ... The switch balls are often confused as puzzles and our frisbees are thought of as hats. At every tradeshow, people are fascinated with our giveaways, but Internet World provided a unique fascination: the "Koozie."

While the SoftLayer switch balls are always a huge hit (that we run out of at every show), what really seemed to intrigue the attendees in London were the SoftLayer Koozies - insulated can coolers. Most attendees thought the Koozies were cell phone holders initially, but once we explained that they are meant to keep your beer cold and your hand dry, they were surprisingly excited to have an opportunity to get a beer to test their Koozie out.

After coming across a few blank stares, giving some explanations and watching "Aha!" moments, I asked a few of the attendees why Koozies were not popular in Europe. The two most common responses: They drink their beer so fast it does not have time to get warm, and Europeans drink their beer warm. To me, drinking warm beer sounds really gross, but the next time I am in the UK, I will have to give it a fair shot ... Maybe the fact that they drink their beer warm is a result of not having a Koozie to keep their hand dry and their beer cold, so we might have brought about a monumental shift in European alcohol consumption! :-)

After demystifying the switch balls and Koozies, I think we did a great job sharing SoftLayer with our new audience, and I can tell that our space in Amsterdam won't be empty for very long after we open the doors there. If you stopped by the booth, I hope you went out of your way to get a cold beverage to test the amazing Koozie technology.

Tour 2010

Ask any SL Employee, and they’ll tell you, we love our schwag. On any given day, you can walk around the datacenter and see several of the employees sporting one of the many items in our line. Recently we’ve announced our 2010 world tour. Overnight, skulls and crossbones dotted the NOC.

That’s right – we’re officially rock stars. The logo itself screams ‘kick-butt’, and the guitar pick embedded within hints at our dream of world domination, rock star style. Instead of killer riffs and addictive hooks, though, we’re using best in the industry hardware and first class services.

It doesn’t stop there, though. It’s like a battle of the bands here in the NOC. Sometimes when you need that extra edge, there’s nothing like some good music to get you moving, up your concentration just a bit, or just drown out the ambient noise (chatter) around you. I’ve got a Pandora station for almost every conceivable genre of music (except for boy bands… that really doesn’t succeed in anything but making me imagine tens of thousands of screaming sixteen year olds – not cool). As the support team crunches away solving problems, you can hear the music going. Our SBE’s crank up their headphones in the datacenter while building the servers. Heck, even some of our team members are ACTUAL rock stars.

The rock star mentality is engrained into all of us here. We all know we’re on the best team in the business, and we sure as heck act like it. We walk with our heads up high, our 3 bars for all to see. (At one point a member of management shaved the 3 bars into their hair to support our SLales team for knocking a goal out of the park. THAT’S a rock star haircut). Keep your eyes out for SoftLayer on our tour. Coming to a town near you!

32K

I know this is old news, but this GoGo inflight wireless is pretty cool. I am 32,000 feet up right now and connected to all my fun, social media toys. I have been tweeting, facebooking, and now I decided to hammer out a blog about it. The really cool thing to me is that I am RDP’d to my desktop at the office and am able to do my email in my native client and have access to all of my different instant messaging networks. I am even going to message our web guys and see if we can have this blog published before I land. I have my power adapter, my seat has a power port and they are serving me a diet coke right now. Man, if I could get this kind of service at the office I might stop traveling because this is the life. No walk up chatting to interrupt my hard working ways, no blenders to tempt me to waste time and blend something, and also no temptation to leave for lunch and go to Rafain’s to eat 6000 calories of fantastic, spicy beef. The snacks on the plane are a bit expensive, so I might even lose a few pounds.

I am in flight back from Cloud Expo in New York and it was amazing how many more people understand the cloud this year than last year. All in all it was a good show. We met a few more of our customers, and once again, we had many compliments. We really like to hear them, so if we end up at a show close to you, please come see us. We will even let you complain if you need to, but we are confident you won’t have to. You can always walk away with a little piece of SoftLayer swag, ranging from a shirt or a cup, to a Frisbee or maybe even a little free computing power.

The next show on my agenda is GDC in Vancouver and then Citrix Synergy in San Francisco. Come by and see me in person! I don’t bite, but I do growl a little. Look out for the upcoming tweets with booth numbers and show times, and as always we might have something special to hand you.

Dickies, Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap…SoftLayer?

Is there anything SoftLayer can't do!!?? Of course not! It seems every day I come to work there is something new that we are offering. Today, I came in ready to read up on any new products we might have released, and to my surprise, we now have a clothing line! Can you believe it!? SoftLayer now has clothing for employees. This includes everything from sweatshirts, to polo's, to t-shirts, to hats, to specialized shirts, including workout shirts. I must say I find the workout shirts ironic considering the number of employees that actually workout. I believe the number is 3...oh wait...maybe 4. I'm not sure how many golfers we have, but the ones who do golf will look good in their SL gear. I hope the SoftLayer clothing line is opened up to the public soon as I would love to see my company represented in the mall by a random “Joe” who appreciated an amazing company. It is truly exciting seeing a company go from several employees in a "closet" and one server room, to a huge entity with a multitude of server rooms, multiple datacenters in multiple locations, a huge array offerings, a cutting edge mentality, a solid track record, a commitment to be the best in the business, and yes, now offers a clothing line. SoftLayer has taken a huge bite out of the on-demand data center and hosting industry and continues to hunger for more. I guess now is the time to put the top clothing manufacturers on notice as SoftLayer is comin' for ya!

Thankful

So here I sit cramped in a seat built for a 10 year old on American flight 1492 from New Orleans to Dallas. There isn’t enough room left for a marshmallow I bet. Yep, I am thankful I just left the site of the Microsoft WPC 2009 where I had to do a little booth duty and mingle with some folks that run the coolest companies out there. The show seemed a little different this year. Last year the recession was just getting going and gaining some steam. The big companies still had previously budgeted money to burn and were doing just that. They had very large booths and better swag and Microsoft rented Minute Maid Park in Houston and threw quite the party. This year was noticeably different. I would bet that over 50% of the people that came by our booth were international which tells me that US companies are still cutting back. One very large US Company wasn’t even at the show and they were a flagship last year. One of our much larger competitors was barely existent, a flyer here a business card there and most other companies had much smaller booths and the swag was just not quite as enticing. Thankfully my kids like anything so they will still be extremely happy with the 3 bags of stuff I was able to round up. I am thankful that SoftLayer was able to hand out just over 1000 cool SoftLayer Frisbees (boomers to our international friends) and 200 cooler bags. The boomers were a great hit at the show and as far as I know no one lost an eye in the process of handing them out. Microsoft still put on a great show and “The Party” at the House of Blues was really cool. I just wish one year they would actually send me the email so I could get the wristband instead of standing in the slacker line.

Enter the ton of bricks that hit me. I am extremely thankful and 99% percent sure, no wait, I am 100% sure that I work for the coolest and one of the fastest growing companies out there. Thankfully after a week of spreading the word about SoftLayer I am on this flight back home. Thankful the pilot knows how to fly and land this jet. Thankful the flight attendant just gave me some lukewarm orange juice. Thankful I remembered to take my laptop out of the bag I checked this time but still managed to leave my cell phone in the checked bag! I am off my leash!

Ok so back to my subject.

I am Thankful this is almost my 2 year anniversary at SoftLayer. Thankful the guys that started this place and the great minds they have added along the way are really running a top notch company. Thankful that I wake up every day excited about my company and my role, thankful that SoftLayer lives within our means, and thankful the things we spend money on are for one thing, to make our product better and our customers happy. Thankful we do not waste on the posh extras that some other companies brag about. Thankful that once a customer tries us out and understands what our system is capable of they rarely ever leave. Thankful SoftLayer has great punch and people drink it regularly with pride, both customers and employees alike. Thankful that our products have the ability to help struggling companies in this down economy and we continue to grow because of it. Thankful we are setting sales records and our churn rates are much lower than this time last year. Thankful word is spreading on how we can let a company hold on to their capital for other expenditures and simply pay monthly for their IT needs on demand. Thankful we have a plan and we stick to it. Thankful we know what we are great at and don’t try to be everything to everyone wasting countless hours complicating our business plan. Thankful I can sleep at night knowing I am at a stable company and I don’t have the worries that many people in our country have during this recession. I wish everyone affected by the recession a fruitful second half of the year and hope that everyone can start recovering from the current hardships.

Oh and I am thankful that the flight attendant has moved along to the folks behind me and is finally finished booty bumping me every 3 seconds and thankful we are 45 minutes from DFW!

More “SLingo”: SLanket vs. Snuggie

I am not ashamed to say that I own both the Slanket and the Snuggie. I got the Snuggie as a gift last year, and I purchased the Slanket for myself a couple of months ago (only partly because of the cool SL name). The Slanket turned out to be a WAY better product. As I sat on the couch with my Slanket and my kitten Linux, I started drawing these hilarious and uncanny parallels between the Slanket and my company, SoftLayer. Once I got started, I just couldn’t stop:

  1. The Slanket is bigger, and thicker. The fabric of the Slanket is far more robust, and doesn’t start “pilling” immediately. It’s designed for constant and vigorous use, and will last me a very long time before wearing out.
  2. There are more buying options with the Slanket – they come in different sizes and many more colors (including a shade that’s *almost* SoftLayer Red), so there’s a Slanket for every need.
  3. The Slanket has a better name – Sleeves + Blanket = Slanket. I’m not likely to talk about my “Snuggie” to my peers, because … well, I’m not a 4-year old.
  4. While the Slanket is a bit more expensive, it is a far superior product. In the Blankets-With-Sleeves industry, you seem to get what you pay for.
  5. I used the Contact Us form on the Slanket website to talk to their SLales team, and got great, personalized service, and a discount! Btw, the owner’s email address is also available online, which shows that he is involved in the day to day operations, and wants to hear from you.

Does any of this sound familiar? These are the same things people love about SoftLayer. I am a very proud SLanket customer. A++ would buy again.
